False Hopes in the Wild West of Design Certification
Companies are hungry for designers...but some companies want to mint their stamp on developing designers. With the plethora of educational materials, established organizations, individualized courses, mentorships, apprenticeships, etc. some companies are taking note and creating their own "certification" programs. All in all...this in itself isn't a terrible idea, but this can lead to gatekeeping, inequality, and wholesale swindling of students' career goals if they pin their hopes on an organization to do the right thing. Companies like IBM, Google, and Salesforce creating their own UX certifications? I have some feelings about this. Join me in this episode to walk through concerns about these company-created programs and certifications and the potential negative outcomes they introduce to an already burgeoning education field.
